Conditional Design is a design program created by Graphic Designers Luna Maurer, Jonathan Puckey, Roel Wouters and the artist Edo Paulus which foregrounds process over finished products.

In order to create a the piece of work the design process is defined by a set of rules and conditions we have to follow. Although there is a set of rules the work lead to unpredictable and spontaneous pieces of work. We were put into a group of four and collaboratively worked together.

The first exercise was called the PERFECT CIRCLE. In order to complete this challenge, each player has a different coloured pen and has thirty seconds each to draw a perfect circle each time. Once enough circles are completed to make the image look like a perfect circle the exercise is finished.

EVALUATION

The perfect circle was far from perfect.
Working as a group was an interesting
experience because we were all able to
work together under a set of instructions.
We are all different as Designers so
creating something as a group was rather
special.

Below is the demonstration of how the
process develops.
THE PROCESS

The second workshop is called hatching. Again in fours, we were given different coloured pens in order to create a different pattern of lines. To start we had to place a dot on the page in a random area placing them 10cm apart. Each person was given an angle to draw in , one was 0-45 degrees, the next 45 - 90, 90 - 145, 145 - 180. Each line had to connect to the next dot within the angle, and once the line joins, that person can fill in the shape with lines. Each point was completely random. Once the lines have joined together, we may stop once the lines start to fill the edge of the paper.
This is the final image of the HATCHING exercise. As you can see it is similar to the original exercise We created an image purely based on the instructions. Although there are instructions, the work is spontaneous because we do not know what the end result may be.
THE PROCESS

This exercise was called THE BEACH, particularly because the end result looks similar to sand particles. Again with four people with four different coloured pens we would place the dots on the page without any of them touching each other. We would continue this until the page was filled.

End result.
THE PROCESS

This exercise is called THE FLUXFOLD. Here we are given one side of the paper to fold. After unfolding the page, we place a dot inside the fold. It does not matter where the dot is on the fold. The next person creates a fold from their corner to the dot that as drawn on previously. Once this continues, we can start to draw within the the folds that join the dots to create an image.

This was the hardest process of them all because it was the most spontaneous. We could not tell what the image would be and ended in a result of straight lines that joined randomly with one another.
